IS REMOVING LASH EXTENSIONS AT HOME SAFE?
Although the following steps can help you tackle the eyelash removal process without damaging your natural lashes, experts don’t recommend you do this at home as it involves stripping away professional lash glue.
“You should always wait for a specialist to remove your eyelash extensions for the protection of your eyes and the health of your natural lashes,” advises Andra Ciulei Marin, an eyelash extension stylist and artistic director at Courtney Akai Lash Boutique in NYC.
Although you won’t be able to perform a professional-style removal in the comfort of your home, there are actions you can take and items you can use to speed up the removal process. It is worth noting that you don’t be surprised if you have to spend a few days or even a little longer for lashes to come off.
DETAILED TUTORIAL ON REMOVING EYELASH EXTENSIONS
Step 1: Remove makeup and wash your face
Gently wash your face and eye area to remove any built-up makeup or dirt in the lashes, oil-based cleanser remover is recommended.
Step 2: Use steam to loosen the bonds of the eyelash extension adhesive.
Heat and moisture are enemies of lash adhesives as these elements can dissolve the chemicals in the glue, affecting the quality of the glue. Therefore, you can use a bowl of steaming hot water to soften the lash glue. Place your face over the bowl, drape a large towel over your head for 10 to 15 minutes and wait for the adhesive to loosen.
Step 3: Continue to weaken extension adhesives with oil
Soak one or two cotton pads in oil, you can use mineral oil, vegetable oil, or coconut oil,… and place them over your eyes (Make sure oil doesn’t run into your eyes). After 5 to 10 minutes, gently run the pads across your eyes to make the extension slide off your eyes
Tip #1: If there are some lashes left, you can use a q-tip soaked in oil to wipe it across your eyelashes again. Don’t worry, oil is good for your natural lashes!
Tip #2: Don’t try to pull or rub the lashes as it will damage the follicle and your natural lashes, causing irritation and swelling.
Step 4: Wash your face
After you’ve removed your extensions, wash your face again with a mild oil-free cleanser like Cetaphil to remove any remaining oil and adhesive from your skin.
